Fujinami has a background in Freestyle-Wrestling, and has competed in many tournaments over the years. He started training at age 8 at the gym of his father, Toshikazu Fujinami, a wrestling coach and a former wrestler himself. Yuhi won bronze medals at the 2017 World Championships and 2018 Asian Games, another bronze at the 2018 World Cup in Iowa, a bronze and silver at the 2015 and 2016 Junior World Wrestling Championships, and 2 silvers at the 2014 Junior Asian Wrestling Championships. He also medalled at the 2013 Cadet World Wrestling Championships, and is a former Japanese National Wrestling Champion. He was also coached by Yuji Takada, and his younger sister is 2021 World Wrestling Champion Akari Fujinami.
