Based mostly on wins and not on performance or should haves (i.e. controversial decisions). Patricio Pitbull ranked 17 (also competes at FW). Olivier Aubin-Mercier retired (Nov 2023, rank 17). Chandler is scheduled for a WW bout (April 2024, rank 12). Tony Ferguson is scheduled for WW bout (June 2024, rank 28).

Makhachev made his first title defense at UFC 284 against the UFC Featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski. He won the fight by unanimous decision after five rounds. His second title defense was set to be a rematch against Charles Oliveira at UFC 294, however, Oliveira withdrew. He instead rematched Alexander Volkanovski at the event. He defeated Volkanovski again, this time by knockout in the first round. He defended his title at UFC 302 against Dustin Poirier. Makhachev submitted Poirier with a brabo choke in the fifth round.
